Editing yet another video, I hit a wall. The “end-product” I had visualized weeks before was being shattered by reality and mistakes in the process of writing, filming and editing. I needed to change direction and figure out how to fix the problem I was facing
After thinking about the change in course, I had a revelation regarding creativity.
Many times we look at creativity as if the end-product is what should define the process, when really, the process is what defines the end-product.
It is allowing the end to define the means rather than using the means to define the result
It’s easy to set your mind on what the finished product should look like or needs to look like, but I’ve come to find this mindset constricts and suffocates creativity. If we put more of an emphasis on the process and not the finished product then God has more space to move in our creativity. He can shift and shape, develop, mold and craft within a process.
God is much more interested in the process.
The process of creativity opens opportunity to discover the fullness of who God created you to be. We were made to partner with God.
We were created in the image of God. God, as Creator, embodies the image we have been made for; to be little creators. Our ability to create allows us to be like God, taking what we know and pursuing that which we don’t.
For a while, I didn’t think I was creative because I wasn’t very artistic. We need to separate art from creativity entirely, understanding that art is creativity but creativity is not always art.
You are creative. It’s how God designed you from the beginning.
The most natural way to create with the Holy Spirit is in our daily lives. It’s true! Many times, I ask the Holy Spirit what I should do or if there’s a different approach I could take. I open my spirit and mind to the Holy Spirit, allowing myself to be led to the outcome only He sees. Creating with God can be that simple.
“Holy Spirit, show me who You are as I work, teach, build, paint, write, and think; as I create. Write through me, paint through me, film through me, capture through me. I surrender my creation to You. Lead my hands and my mind to create more than I can create on my own. What are You saying about my creative process?”
The Father deeply desires to be involved in your process. It’s necessary within our relationship with Him. Relationship is a process, not a quick fix.
We are all creative. Wherever you are in business, art, science, education, ministry, family or otherwise, your creativity matters for those around you. It does not define you, but your bravery could change the world. You just may not know the end-product yet.
