An Invitation for Fasting
Sermon Summary
Pastor Vincent Carpenter invites the church to see prayer and fasting not as a list of rules but as an invitation to experience God. Drawing from Matthew 4:1-11, he looks at Jesus' forty days in the wilderness and the three temptations He faced: to turn stones into bread, to throw Himself from the highest point of the temple and to receive all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. In each one, Satan's aim was not simply to lead Jesus into sin but to distort the character of God, question Jesus' identity and offer an alternative to the Father's plan. With encouragement from key Scriptures, Pastor Vincent reminds us that God listens, cares and comforts, that we are His unique creation and that He calls us beyond ourselves to partner with Him for our city, our nation and the nations of the earth.
Key Scriptures (NIV)
Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Psalm 8:3-4
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
Psalm 139:13-14
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
Isaiah 58:6-7
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter, when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"
Instructions for Groups
Choose a few of these questions from the various categories to go deeper in the sermon and put the truths of Scripture into practice. You don't need to answer every question. Select the ones that will best help your group engage with God's Word and apply it to your lives.
Discussion Questions
Scripture Study & Deeper Understanding
1. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Pastor Vincent pointed out that the first temptation wasn't really about food but about whether God would take care of Jesus' needs. What is Satan actually questioning in each of the three temptations, and what do you notice about how Jesus responds every time?
2. Just before this passage, at Jesus' baptism, the Father declares, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). How does that context help explain why Satan opens with "If you are the Son of God" and why Jesus felt no need to prove Himself from the top of the temple?
3. Read Isaiah 58:6-7. According to God, what is the purpose of the fast He chooses? How does that outward focus connect with Jesus' answer to the third temptation, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only"?
Encouragement, Challenge & Personal Testimony
4. Pastor Vincent said Satan's main agenda is not to get us into sin but to distort the character of God, often through the lie that "God doesn't really care." Where do you see that lie show up in your own thinking or relationships?
5. During his sabbatical, Pastor Vincent heard the Lord say, "You are my unique creation." Psalm 139 tells us we were knit together with great care. Why is it so tempting to try to do something to become somebody rather than resting in who we are in Christ?
6. Satan will offer us anything in God's will that doesn't include suffering. What "safe" or comfortable alternatives are you most drawn to?
Putting It Into Practice
7. Pastor Vincent described how unhurried, "uncomplicated" time sitting with God during his sabbatical helped him realize God was truly listening to him. Fasting is one way to make that kind of space for God in our busy lives. What is one thing (a meal, a screen, a habit or part of your schedule) the Holy Spirit may be inviting you to set aside so you can make room for Him? When and how will you start?
8. God wants to take care of us so we don't have to be consumed with caring for ourselves. Who is one person or need (in your family, in your city, in our nation or among the nations) you can intentionally care for this week? What is one practical step of service, whether practically or in prayer, you can take toward that need?
Prayer
9. Listening to the Holy Spirit: We're going to take focused time to listen to the Holy Spirit and what He wants to speak to us personally based on our time in Scripture and discussion. Let's sit in silence for 60 seconds and ask the Spirit to speak to each one of us.
[After the minute of silence] What do you sense the Holy Spirit highlighting or speaking to you as we prayed?
10. Prayer Requests: What prayer requests come up for you based on our Scripture study and discussion? How can we pray for you as you seek to apply what God has shown you?
