Pray God's Word: The Word That Never Comes Back Empty

Sermon Summary

The message opened with an honest and countercultural word to graduates: you don't have what it takes. Rather than the standard commencement speech that tells young people to chase their dreams and trust their own preparation, in this sermon Pastor Carl Gulley offered something far more durable.

The gospel is clear that none of us, at any stage of life, are sufficient on our own. We need the help, power and provision that comes from praying God’s Word.

Key Scriptures

Isaiah 55:11 (NASB1995) "So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."

Ephesians 6:17-18 (NASB1995) "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints."

Hebrews 4:12 (NASB1995) "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Colossians 3:16 (NASB1995) "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God."

1 John 5:14-15 (NASB1995) "This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him."

Instructions for Groups

Choose a few of these questions from the various categories to go deeper in the sermon and put the truths of Scripture into practice. You don't need to answer every question. Select the ones that will best help your group engage with God's Word and apply it to your lives.

Discussion Questions

Scripture Study and Deeper Understanding

1. Read Isaiah 55:8-11 together as a group. What is God saying about the difference between His thoughts and ours in verses 8 and 9? Why does that context matter for understanding the promise He makes in verse 11?

2. In Ephesians 6:17-18, Paul describes the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit and immediately connects it to prayer. What is significant about that connection? What does it tell us about how the Word is meant to be used, not just read?

3. In Matthew 4, Jesus responds to each of Satan's temptations with a specific scripture, saying "It is written." What does this reveal about how Jesus prepared for that moment? What does it suggest about the relationship between Scripture memorization, prayer, and spiritual readiness?

Encouragement, Challenge, and Personal Testimony

4. The sermon drew a distinction between knowing about prayer and actually knowing how to pray. Which of those has been more true in your own life, and what has that looked like practically?

5. Carl shared how his mother's years of praying Scripture over her family created a kind of spiritual foundation he only recognized later. Has there been someone in your life who carried you in prayer, perhaps someone you weren't even aware of at the time? What does their faithfulness stir in you?

6. Bonhoeffer said to pray from the riches of God's Word, not the poverty of our circumstances. Where do you find yourself most prone to pray from your circumstances rather than from Scripture? What would it look like to shift that?

Putting It into Practice

7. During the sermon, the congregation was challenged to find one scripture for their own need and one to pray over someone else, then to put their name or that person's name into the verse and begin praying it daily. Take a few minutes now as a group to do this together. Share the scripture you found and the situation you are praying it over.

8. The sermon used the image of weight lifting: the reps you put in now build the muscle you will need later. What is one specific, sustainable practice you can commit to this week to begin or deepen the habit of praying God's Word daily?

Prayer

9. Praying Scripture Together

Let's close our time by actually doing what we've been discussing. As a group, we are going to pray scripture out loud together over one another.

Use one or more of the following passages. Read the verse first, then invite group members to pray it slowly and personally, inserting their own name or the name of someone they are believing for.

  • For peace and sufficiency: 2 Corinthians 12:9 - "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness."

  • For purity and staying close to God: Psalm 119:9,11 - "How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You."

  • For knowing the love of Christ: Ephesians 3:18 - "May be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge."

  • For perseverance: 1 Corinthians 15:58 - "Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord."

After praying through a passage together, sit quietly for 60 seconds and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you personally. Then share: what did you sense Him highlighting as you prayed?
