Wisdom With Money - Lessons from Proverbs: Proverbs Pt. 8

Sermon Summary

Whether you feel confident or unsure about money, your Heavenly Father wants to teach you wisdom in this area, drawn straight from His Word rather than books, family opinions or online advice. From Proverbs, this message highlights that God himself, not a job or the stock market, is our true provider, and that honoring Him with the first fruits of what we earn shapes a heart of gratitude and faith. Jesus does not just want to hand us better financial principles, He wants to meet us personally in this area of life and transform us from the inside out.

Key Scriptures

Proverbs 10:22 (NIV)
The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it.

Proverbs 3:9 to 10 (NIV)
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 30:8 to 9 (NIV)
Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, Who is the LORD? Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

Proverbs 11:24 to 25 (NIV)
One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Luke 19:8 to 9 (NIV)
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount. Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.

Discussion Questions

Scripture Study & Deeper Understanding

  1. Read Proverbs 10:22 slowly. What does this verse teach about the true source of provision? How does the phrase without painful toil shape your understanding of how God blesses?

  2. Look at Proverbs 3:9-10 in the context of the surrounding chapter. What is being asked of the reader, and what promise is attached to it? How does the idea of first fruits connect with other places in Scripture where God calls His people to give from the beginning rather than the leftovers?

  3. In Proverbs 30:8-9, what specific request does the writer make of God, and why does he name both poverty and riches as things to be wary of? What does this say to someone without savings or a steady income?

Encouragement, Challenge & Personal Reflection

  1. Of the six lessons in this message, provision, hard work, honest gain, honoring God with first fruits, stewardship, or things more valuable than money, which one do you sense God highlighting for you right now?

  2. The message noted that only a small percentage of American Christians tithe, and that average giving falls well below what Scripture describes. As you consider your own giving, what emotions surface: conviction, peace, resistance, curiosity? What do those emotions reveal about where you place your trust?

  3. Read the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10. His encounter with Jesus changed the way he handled his money almost immediately. Is there an area of your financial life where you sense Jesus inviting Himself in to look different?

Putting It Into Practice

  1. Prayerfully consider your current giving. Is there a next step you sense God inviting you to take, whether starting to tithe, increasing a percentage, or giving more consistently? Write down one specific, measurable commitment.

  2. Of the practical proverbs on work, saving, or planning, which one points to a habit you need to start, strengthen, or let go of this week?

Prayer

  1. Listening to the Holy Spirit: Set aside a focused minute of silence and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you personally about what you have read and reflected on. Afterward, write down what you sense Him highlighting or saying to you.

  2. Personal Prayer: What prayer requests come up for you out of this study? Write them down and spend a few moments praying over them, asking God for wisdom and peace as you apply what He has shown you.
